How do I become a volunteer?
If you're new to Girlguiding, become a volunteer in 3 simple steps:
- Register your interest - fill out our form and give your details. We need to know where you’d like to volunteer and how we can contact you.
- We'll be in touch - someone from the local volunteer team in your area will contact you for a chat, usually within 7 days.
- Tell us what you want to do - during this chat let us know about your skills and how much time you have to spare. This will help us to find the right volunteer role for you and start our recruitment check process.
If you've volunteered in the past or had a child in Girlguiding, you might already have an account with us. Find out how to register to volunteer as an existing user.

Questions you might have
Anyone! We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and experiences. There’s no requirement to have been involved in guiding before or to have loads of time to give. There's all sorts of flexible ways to get involved, whether you want to volunteer with girls directly or help behind the scenes!
Some of our roles are women-only, but there are lots of opportunities for men to volunteer and support local guiding too. You can find out which roles are open to men by checking the ‘Available to women only’ column of the role requirements tables.

You can find out where Girlguiding is happening near you by entering the postcode where you’d like to volunteer and email address via our registration form. A map will appear to show you places where girls meet in your area. This is the same process whether you want to volunteer directly with girls or support guiding from behind the scenes – find out more about the different ways of volunteering for Girlguiding.
Don’t worry; you aren’t committing to anything by entering these details. This is just so we know where you are and how to contact you once you’ve chosen the unit you’re interested in. We won’t store your data or email you until you’ve completed and submitted the form.
To keep girls safe, anyone over the age of 18 needs to go through our recruitment and vetting process. All volunteers must complete reference checks. And if your role involves regular contact or staying overnight at a residential event with girls and young women, you’ll need to complete a criminal record disclosure check. Your local volunteer team will be able to advise you on checks needed for different roles and begin the process once you’ve decided which role is right for you.
For all roles you’ll need to complete some training designed to help keep our members safe. You can complete this training either via the learning platform as an e-learning, an online trainer-led session, or an in-person session in your local area.
We also offer lots of additional online and in-person training sessions which you can take part in, to support you in your volunteer role and your personal development. Find out more about what’s available via our learning and development pages and your progression as a volunteer.
